The confusion between the various species of Hydrocotyle and
Centella is understandable when one looks at the leaves. I have
been shown the main difference between the "large-leaved" or
"Vietnamese" and the "Australian" or "small-leaved" forms of
Hydrocotyle and I am still confused. Presently (2005) my
understanding is that the so called "large-leaved" or "Vietnamese"
"brahmi" is Hydrocotyle
javanica , while
the "small-leaved" is applicable to a number of
Hydrocotyle species, including Centella asiatica (preferred name) or Hydrocotyle
asiatica (recognized synonym).
