Note
On the world scene 2 so called
"purple potatoes" or "blue potatoes" dominate : 'Purple Congo' (Australia) and 'All Blue' (America). Each
have
many
synonyms,
legitimate
or not, and some authors even suggest
that they are the same cultivar. I am convinced not. I intend to
demonstrate my point with photographic evidence in the near future.
Please watch this space.
'Purple Congo' is one of
the most interesting potatoes from the culinary, horticultural,
and medicinal point of views. Unfortunately it is neglected by
professionals. Consequently it is mostly left to gardeners and
enthusiasts to maintain and document it. This has led to
a great confusion regarding the cultivar name(s). Is there more than one cultivar
? or are they all derived from the original "Vitelotte" mentioned
in the Vilmorin catalogues of the early 1900's (all
the
above
names
being
synonyms) ?
A short
article by H. de Jong and A. M. Murphy from the Canadian Centre de recherches sur la pomme de terre
Agriculture et Agroalimentaire,
not only confirm some of my own suspiscions but more importantly
I was pleased to
discover that the medicinal properties of the purple-fleshed pototoes
finally got investigated. One may speculate as to why such valuable
vegetables are not at the center of medicinal research rather than on
the outer periphery but this is getting too political. I do part
slightly
from these 2 authors in the sense that they seem to rely on
genetics in order
to investigate the synonymy further. This is in my humble opinion
a little too unreliable a technique when it comes to such closely
related entities. The 'All
Blue'
cultivar is
generally displayed with a lighter blue flesh, a less dark skin but
more importantly with shallow eyes while 'Vitelotte' and 'Purple Congo'
have rather deeper eyes.
In order to unravel the secrets of all "blue" potatoes we are going to
need plenty of photographic evidence. Serge Jodra, on the
French site < http://www.cosmovisions.com/pommedeterre.htm
> mentions also a "Vitelotte Rouge" and some "Vitelotte
Jaune".
These would be worth exploring. No doubt some native relatives can be
seen in the Catalogues of
Bolivian varieties on the tremendous new PROINPAsite (in the "PDF" column some
file are .html and some are .pdf).
