Our evaluation of these sites is indicated with stars : ***** = extreme value, **** = almost excellent, *** = fair, ** = room for improvement, * = Good for a few words, no star = not yet evaluated, and comments are added at the end of samples of sites' content. Please note that this is a very biased evaluation made from the standpoint of specialists in name handling. Many sites are specialised primarily in one or several things whilst their listing of names are understandably given lower priorities and consideration. This is not an evaluation of the sites but of their serving of names only. The list is in order of author or site names. "Search in page", command "F" or command "G" can be used to search for a word, a language, or a name. Can't find it ? Try any of our indexes for language-specific dictionaries and translators. Due to problems with some languages and diacritics some reference names can only be displayed on these language-specific pages.

Our comment :
Generally excellent, except when bamboos and palms are concerned when
it becomes only good! (simply because it does not list some species,
even some genera). Particularly useful to track down botanical synonyms
and authority names. Has a few common names and plenty of references
for most species listed. Nicely complemented with IPNI and others. For
one of the foremost taxonomic references, a little deficient in the
area of synonymy in the sense that binomials are used instead of
trinomials, increasing the confusion. See KM.

Taxonomy only. Complements nicely the USDA GRIN database when tracking
down botanical names.
ITRANS
Our comment :
when we look back at all the work we have been able to do in the last
few years whilst Unicode is being implemented and universally accepted,
we can only be grateful to Avinash and others like him who place higher
values before economical profit. The billions of dollars accumulated by
the giants of the IT world would have done us absolutely no good at all
during that time. For one thing we cannot afford their equipment, and
they would not grace us with any funding at all.
Kars
A good effort by
the community of Karlsøy (as we can gather) at presenting its
flora to the world. Covers only 125 species but each is well
illustrated and botanically labelled although the authority names are
missing.
KH
Our comment : an
unusual database in its raw data form to enable importing into other
databases. Tends to be limited to herbs / medicinal plants by nature of
the site. One problem is lack of authority in botanical names, the
other is that accents are often lost due to the equipment used. text
files, databases and PCs have always been poor handlers of such things.
See sister file on Polish names attempting to remedy to
this.

Our comment :
this synonymic index is often vital in understanding some relationships
erroneously stated on works confined to binomials. For example saying
that "Ornithogalum angustifolium = Ornithogalum umbellatum" (a typical
relationship in many taxonomic lists including some such as GRIN) is
not the same at all as saying that "Ornithogalum angustifolium =
Ornithogalum umbellatum var. angustifolium". One allows for linguistic
work to follow, the former not only prohibit linguistic development but
it also further confuses an already very messy nomenclatural world. A
few more French generic names and an extension to world species would
be fantastic.

Our comment :
Lacks authorities for botanical names and photos are limited to
thumbnail size, however every plant is illustrated. Most of the
preferred ornamentals of the world are listed from the humble yellow
carrot to the most exotic tropical blooms.

Our comment :
Japanese people may critisise this site for lack of Kanji and Hiragana,
but from our international view points this is one of the best Japanese
nomenclatural sites. It could be improved by adding Romaji but who's waiting ?

Our comment :
Lacks authorities for botanical names but this is not a "plant site"
but rather a "food site". Many plant names and ingredients are covered
nevertheless. Polish sorted. Rather rare combination of languages and
reasonably done.
