1. On Sasa veitchii
Three versions of "kuma" were found in the literature for Kuma zasa.
We suspect that only 1 or 2 are correct. Dr Masatoshi Watanabe says
that the character "kuma" refers to the "white-marginating" of the
leaves in winter, hence the synonyms bearing the epithet
albomarginata ; Sasa albomarginata for example. Dictionaries
consulted so far cannot confirm which character is incorrect. We have
displayed the 3 options. Feedback is welcome.
2. On Sasa palmata nebulosa
There is some confusion about the preferred botanical name for
Sasa
paniculata Makino &
Shibata f. nebulosa
Makino & Shibata . Prof. Ohrnberger lists it as a synonym of both
Sasa
cernua Makino f.
nebulosa (Makino &
Shibata) Tatewaki &
Sasa
palmata (Mitford) Camus f.
nebulosa (Makino) S. Suzuki. Given that Sasa paniculata Makino & Shibata = Sasa palmata (Mitford) Camus (in line with Prof. Orhnberger sorting), we lean in
favour of S. palmata f. nebulosa as the preferred name for S.
paniculata f. nebulosa.
We also have doubts about the romanised Japanese name "shako han
chiku" . It looks like a romanisation process gone wrong. It should
be "tan" not "han" .
3. On the genus Sasa
We have covered this genus as far as our equipment will allow. Having
reach the capacity limit of our currently available memory. Until we
receive funding to enable us to upgrade the above records will remain
as they are apart from some minor corrections (July 2003).
A most thorough listing of nearly all forms and cultivars of Sasa, with botanical synonyms, romanised Japanese names and brief descriptions (in English) can be found in D. Ohrnberger's book : The Bamboos of the World, 1999 pp. 84 - 110, pp. 570 - 578 (29 pages of small tight print, A4 format + 8 pages of index dedicated to the Genus Sasa).
