Due to confusion in the synonymy   S. capsicoides = S. aculeatissimum, many common names are wrongly attributed to either one species or the other. These 2 species are not synonyms, apparently Schulz was not considering the same plant as Jacq. When he named S. aculeatissimum as a synonym of  S. capsicoides. This mistake is still repeated today, for example by the PlantNet Database, while the experts, at the global taxonomic resource for the nightshade family Solanaceae disagree and give the explanation: Solanum aculeatissimum sensu Schulz, non Jacq. = Solanum capsicoides All.

The binomial "Solanum indicum" is confusing to both lay people and academics due to the many authorities that have attempted to pin it down taxonomically. Consequently when one finds a photo or a text referring to "Solanum indicum" one is never sure if it is meant by that  "Solanum anguivi" or "Solanum violaceum" or even  "Solanum ferox". It has been rejected by taxonomists as the following notes from USDA - ARS - GRIN attest but the literature is riddled with "Solanum indicum" so all the common names associated with it become even more unreliable than usual.
"Solanum indicum L., nom. rej., a rejected name (nomen utique rejiciendum) under Vienna ICBN Art. 56 & App. V that is unavailable for use.
Hepper, F. N. 1978. (456,457) Proposals to list Solanum indicum L. and Solanum sodomeum L. as rejected names under Article 69 of the ICBN. Taxon 27:555."

Notes

Some readers have asked why many of the above species "which have nothing to do with eggplants" are mentioned in a page dedicated to eggplants. It is simple. In the sorting process we have to consider any related wild or domesticated species that share common names or can shade some light on some trend of thought on common names directly or indirectly related to eggplant common names. Ideally all Solanum should be on the same set of pages but given the hundreds of species within that genus, together with the thousands of synonyms it would be impossible to handle. We have basically separated Eggplants and Potatoes and squeezed of few other fruits or species of economic importance as well, in order to avoid having too many sets of pages dedicated to Solanum only. We may come up with a better solution by 2020!!!

Most cultivars of all the above eggplant species are represented on the 2 following sites

Most impressive photograph of the full range of colours and shapes of this species plus a few others by David Cavagnaro, in our gallery.
