This genus provides ample ammunition for controversial cultivar naming. A number of names based on romanised Japanese are not based on correct romanisation ie. common romanised Japanese names should match the 'Cultivar name' in order to avoid confusion. Examples are :
On the other side of the world Europeans have renamed Japanese cultivars with names bearing no relation whatsoever to the plant or its movements around the world. In my view those should be avoided because they add to the general confusion and unecessarily glog the lists of synonyms. Examples of those which a priory look like "flag flying" exercises more than anything else : 'Napoleon Bonaparte' for 'Sotaroana', 'Joseph de Jussieu' for 'Nagamine' / 'Nagaminea' / 'Nagamineus'. Another called 'Cyrano de Bergerac' would almost be fair enough given that most other Japanese-based names for striata type have been used within the genus but what's wrong with 'Striata' or 'Striatus'
