Notes
1. It
is always humbling to contemplate
how much more work remains to be done on each genus. This list of Rubus
from plantamed.com.br. is long enough to occupy anyone for hundreds of
hours : <
http://www.plantamed.com.br/GEN/Rubus.htm
>.
2. A beautiful photo of multicoloured
fruits from a few species displays the range of colours available
within this genus at the USDA.
3. We have pointed out many times before that
common names can be very unreliable and that this is sometimes due to
the confusion in the taxonomy. The genus Rubus present such typical
examples.
To start with, the basic names
"blackberry" and "raspberry" are often interchangeable in
many languages. This is partly due to the colour of the fruits of those
plants. There can be black raspberries or red blackberries for
instance. The English names : "Ceylon blackberry " can be applied to very different
species such as Rubus ellipticus
Sm., Rubus
niveus
Thunb.and Rubus moluccanus L. "Himalaya
blackberry", "Himalayan blackberry" can be applied to very
different species such as Rubus rugosus Sm. and / or the
troublesome pair Rubus discolor Weihe & Nees / Rubus procerus P.J.
Müller ex Boulay
"Molucca bramble", "Molucca
raspberry" can be applied to very different species such as Rubus
ellipticus Sm. and Rubus moluccanus L.
In French the Pacific
Islands names "Piquant loulou", "Raisin marron",
"Vigne marron" , and possibly "Framboise
marron" can be applied to very different species
such as Rubus alceifolius Poir. and Rubus moluccanus
L. It should be noted that the epithet "marronne" is a spelling error
propagated throughout the English speaking world unfamiliar with the
concept of gender. Although Framboise or vigne are of the feminine
gender, the colour "marron" does not vary and is the same for both
masculine and feminine forms. More over the combination "Piquant
loulou" or "Piquant lou-lou" can be applied to species of different
genera such as Acacia.
As far as the names from India are concerned very few if any came to
us in their original scripts. So none of them can be considered
reliable as long as only the transcriptions are available.
