Again, as with many kinds of
beans, the names of the wild and cultivated species of Phaseolus coccineus
are confused. Our present understanding is that the subspecies coccineus would
be correctly applied to cultivated runner beans and most common names
applied to the species would also fit the cultivated forms. Of
course the trade never bother about subsp. Neither would they
bother about the group names. We used them above (based on flower colours) simply for the
sake of clarity.

Most names under Phaseolus lunatus L. (Lunatus Group) are
applied to the species name by most authors, however official taxonomy
has blurred the lines between "Sieva beans" (small seeded) and the true
Lima bean (large-seeded) on one hand, and between the edible varieties
/ types and the toxic types such as var. sylvester on the other, by
lumping all edibles under var. lunatus. To some extent this is also
aggravated by mixing both edible and non-edible under "synonyms" of
Phaseolus lunatus because it is often wrongly assumed that Phaseolus
lunatus is a synonym of Phaseolus
lunatus var. lunatus.
For all these reasons we think that adopting the Group system is by far
preferable.

var. lunatus as the preferred
name for the edible Lima bean...and Sieva bean ... and presumably the
round-seeded cultivars etc.

2. On Phaseolus lunatus L.
The groups and types of Lima beans / Sieva beans within Phaseolus lunatus L. are far from sorted out satisfactorily. Most names under Phaseolus lunatus L. (Lunatus Group) are applied to the species name by most authors, then again 150 experts have agreed upon "var. lunatus" as the preferred name for cultivated varieties (Wiersema & León 1999). More documentation is needed (photographs being prepared). For example are all Sieva type cultivars dwarf ? if not, some of the old names are not correct. Despite my strong preference for Latin in group names I am wondering how to name the "Sieva" and "Potato" groups in Botanical Latin ? As to the name "Big-Lima", a not very elegant option, it may be descriptive enough in a sense although if there are dwarf cultivars, how do they fit or how are they distinguished from the climbing cultivars ? See also notes under Phaseolus lunatus L. and Phaseolus lunatus L. var. silvester Baudet
3. On Phaseolus vulgaris L.
Phaseolus vulgaris L. which was studied in great details a few decades ago is now in a state of confusion due to both neglect by taxonomists and modern breeding. The list below illustrates early classifications (pre 1950). Today (2000) the accepted practice is to use names of the type "Phaseolus vulgaris L. 'Name'", where even the former " cv." is considered superfluous. This name obviously lacks precision. Short of a description or an image, more often than not, neither the cultivar nor the botanical name will give any indication on the type of plant in question, for example whether it is dwarf or climbing or indeterminate. They will not give any indication of the seed colour, and very little else will be revealed about the "variety" hence inviting name manipulation for commercial reasons. So perhaps a little care in the use of Latin epithets could be advantageous.
Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Flageolet Group) cv. 'Elsa' would be an improvement and in line with nomenclatural standards but does not reveal if we are dealing with a dwarf or climbing cultivar.
Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. nanus (L.) Aschers (Flageolet Group) cv. 'Elsa' or Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. humilis Alef. (Flageolet Group) cv. 'Elsa' would be more meaningful. Alternatively Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. nanus (L.) Aschers cv. 'Elsa' would be meaningful even to people whose native language is not English and may satisfy those who advocate for short names but on the other hand is not in line with current nomenclatural standards ( "var." is prohibited for domesticated "varieties" or forms)
Phaseolus vulgaris L. subsp. nunas var. chlorosperma or Phaseolus vulgaris L. subsp. nunas var. melanosperma would almost be descriptive enough even if no cultivar name is given and even if one does not understand the Spanish-derived "nunas".
Presently (1999) the cultivar groups and sub-groups are still being worked out. Those shown above are merely suggestions. My guess is that the world will never agree on one general set and that the new system will be as confusing as the old, using Botanical Latin. For example the recognized "market classes", a rough classification worked out for trading purposes, vary from continent to continent so how can types be agreed on. A hybrid system combining group names in Latin would offer the most versatile solution, it would not offend or mislead non-English-speaking people and would justifiably reward the populations of the world who have bothered to learn Botanical Latin.
The following (estimated pre 1950) are descriptive but still ambiguous because one has to guess what the shapes and colours refer to ... and one could guess wrongly, although It would appear that seeds are mostly referred to. Anyone interested in matching those names with some of our photographs ?
Information is needed on the following botanical names, posted by the GRIN Database. Why ? Because catalogues and reference books of the past such as the Vilmorin Catalogues, Prof. D. Bois Encyclopédie Biologique, used by ethnobotanists and others, refer to such names and it may be useful to understand their meaning. It may also help in sorting out groups of common names.
