We are now reasonably convinced (2003) that the words "Gimmei" and "Kimmei" based on the correct romanisations "Ginmei" and "Kinmei" are wrong. They were mistakenly "adapted from the Japanese to the "American" or "European" or "international". It does not matter what the source of the error is, the fact is that there is a confusing error that should be corrected. Therefore we propose that all cultivars bearing the names 'Gimmei' and 'Kimmei' be respectively replaced with the correct romanised names 'Ginmei' and 'Kinmei'. Our above records reflect this decision which may or may not (despite our strong recommendation) be accepted by the international community. In support of this we simply point to the original Japanese scripts ; (kinmei) and ; (ginmei). The fact that Japanese scientists have always written these names thus warrants a change in the western words which do not mean anything by themselves either in any European language or Botanical Latin. Supposing the Japanese language was not at the source of the names, the fact that "Kimmei" and "gimmei" can be translated in Japanese katakana (the scientific Japanese script) as and is not a seal of approval because the corresponding kanji (the real Japanese) would be meaningless. Further more katakana can only be used reasonably for meaningful foreign names and as we pointed out previously "kimmei" and "gimmei" are not meaningful words in any language.
The cultivars of Phyllostachys edulis (or pubescens or heterocycla) : 'Bicolor', 'Nabeshimana', 'Okina', 'Viridisulcata' still need to be worked on. The descriptions in Ohrnberger are not enough and they do not match accurately some of the names, for instance 'Nabeshimana' which is meant to be yellow or golden-culmed with green stripe, hence the Japanese name kinmei mousou is described as green-culmed with yellow stripe.
The photographs in this gallery by von Johannes Stölzle illustrate these further challenges.
