Taxonomists have chosen " Bambusa bambos (L.) Voss" to describe this species but just about everybody else prefers " Bambusa arundinacea (Retz.) Willd.". I like to use the epithet "arundinacea" because it describes the main common (although not ever present) feature of this bamboo, whilst "bambos" does not convey the same idea.

On Bambusa verticillata
This is a very misused and abused specific name that cannot be relied upon. I can only refer any reader to D. Ohrnberger when this name is dubiously used in the literature. Following its trace throughout history via Ohrnberger 's cross-matchings and descriptions may help in finding the current preferred name and valid synonyms.
On Bambusa vulgaris
I used to be critical of nursery staff for publishing names of the type "Bambusa vulgaris wamin" , "cutting out the c." as they say, meaning all authority names and botanical markers such as "subsp.", "var.", "cv.", etc. (incidently even taxonomists have given "cv." away.). Now not only do I understand "the trade" by I sympathise. However I would let everyone down if I failed to point out the details especially the anomalies.
A group name has been established for golden-culmed cultivars (PROSEA) implying that there are several varieties or forms or cultivars but in his monumental "Bamboos of the World" (the most up-to-date and complete catalogue on / reference of taxonomic names), Ohrnberger does not recognise any taxonomically. He argues that the variations observed around the world do not justify different botanical names and that no cultivar name has been officially published. He further groups together all bamboos with golden culms, variegated / striped or not, under 'Striata'. This explains why we have mixed names referring to golden-culms with those referring to striped culmed, all listed under 'Striata'. It seems that taxonomists need to recognize other cultivars within the "Golden-culm Group". A story to be developed further. The cultivar 'Kinmei' under this species could be considered as a golden-culmed (with green stripe(s)) whether it is different enough from 'Striata', a variable cultivar, or not, is a matter of opinion. These two cultivars are certainly recognised and have different names in Japan.
